Kuan-Teh Jeang, M.D., Ph.D., President
2010 begins a new decade. It is a landmark point for SCBA, a quarter century after our founding. As an organization matures, it is important periodically to reflect upon who we are and what we strive to achieve. In one perspective, we are a diverse society of Chinese and Chinese American-scientists from many different geographic origins. In another perspective, we are constituted of members who span four generations of professionalism in the biosciences (adopting the common vernacular that every twenty years mark a generation). Our Society is nevertheless united by some shared goals of our members: to achieve scientific excellence, to promulgate leadership in science, to promote the visibility of Chinese and Chinese-American colleagues, and to provide an important bridge between oriental and occidental cultures. With the increasing movement of global commerce, economy, and science edging towards a Pacific geocenter, SCBA is in a unique position to make special contributions to the development of worldwide bioscience in the coming decades.
I am humbled by the SCBA mantle of leadership. My job is a volunteer position in which I will do the best that I can for you and for our Society. I recognize that leadership does not come from top down, nor by fiat; rather leadership arises from grass root, from ground up. The strength of a society rests ultimately with the quality, the energy, and the motivation of its members. A good leader listens. I shall not make grand promises, but I do promise to listen and then to act in best interest of the Society. Your input and your advice will make our society better and empower its impact in the scientific community and the political arena. Please do take a moment to contact me with your critiques and your suggestions.
In closing, I welcome you to serve the society with me. Together, we hope, we can, and we will move SCBA forward.
Sincerely,
Kuan-Teh Jeang
